  • Classic Game Room reviews POINTMASTER for ATARI 2600

Classic Game Room reviews THE POINTMASTER joystick controller for the Atari 2600 video game console system. The Atari 2600 VCS was a very popular game system since its release in 1977 and had numerous 3rd party add ons and accessories created specifically for it. This joystick controller called the POINT MASTER is from Discwasher! Don’t they make disc washer devices???? Well… ok. Whatever. At some flea market or garage sale back in the day I came home with a POINTMASTER and played it a few times. I tried it again recently and don’t care for this controller much. It is more like a flight stick with the arcade style button on the top of the grip stick joy stick thingy. It wobbles, falls over and is fairly useless. However, it gives a great look at the amount of accessories and peripherals that were created specifically for the Atari 2600 back in the day, even in the 1980’s! Watch Classic Game Room for more controller and video game hardware reviews from Atari, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Sega and Magnavox!!!

I just bought one of these at a resale store for $3. It isn’t a bad controller (the wobble is indeed a problem, it makes your wrist sore pretty quickly), but I wish there was a button on the base, instead of just the one button on the top.

I’ll always prefere the EPYX third party controller. Forget if it had a nifty name. But, this thing cradled into your left hand and had a steel shafted joystick for the right and had true switches inside. First version’s only flaw: Not friendly towards the left handed population. Sadly, the later revision that expanded towards the NES used short cuts in construction and didn’t work so well.
